ATHENS Kerryon Johnson Lions Jersey , May 22 (Xinhua) -- Greek police launched a wide investigation to locate and arrest a suspected criminal gang which stole medical equipment worth some 500,000 euros (561,800 U.S. dollars) from four public hospitals in a week, Greek national news agency AMNA reported Monday.
Deputy Health Minister Pavlos Polakis said measures are being taken to ensure all patients who had scheduled appointments for diagnostic tests in the hospitals affected will receive the needed care.
On May 15, the director of the Athens cancer hospital Aghios Savvas notified police of a theft of medical equipment from the gastroenterology department during the previous night.
The endoscopes were worth approximately 300,000 euros, according to estimates. They had been bought with donations.
On Sunday and Monday, the directors of three other state hospitals in the central Greece cities of Larissa, Volos and Lamia reported similar thefts. In all cases, the perpetrators targeted mainly gastroenterology departments and acted in a similar pattern.
Police investigators believe that the members of the gang broke into the hospitals during the weekend, while the departments were not in operation, and fled with medical diagnostic instruments.
Following the unprecedented series of incidents, Greek authorities are stepping up security measures in hospitals nationwide, a Health Ministry press release stressed.
The Greek state health system has been hit hard by the seven-year debt crisis. Doctors and medical staff often protest about spending cuts in the context of the Greek bailout program which have resulted in shortages in human resources, medicines and equipment.
As many Greeks, suffering from chronic unemployment and recession, have turned their backs on private clinics and seek medical care in state hospitals in recent years, in several cases patients have to wait for several weeks for a diagnostic test or months to undergo an operation.
